Introduction
If an Ag/AgCl reference electrode has dried out, it can often be regenerated and returned to reliable operation. This procedure restores the internal reference system and electrolyte vessel by removing crystallized potassium chloride (KCl), refilling the electrode with fresh 3 mol/L KCl electrolyte, and re-establishing the proper equilibrium within the reference system. Before beginning, gather the required materials, including 3 mol/L KCl electrolyte solution, a syringe, and ultrapure water.
During the regeneration process, the reference system and electrolyte vessel are thoroughly rinsed to remove all KCl crystals, refilled while eliminating air bubbles, and allowed to re-equilibrate before reuse. The reference system should be stored upright for at least six hours to fully saturate the diaphragm and restore a stable reference potential. Before reassembling the electrode, verify that the electrolyte vessel is filled to the indicated level, the reference system is free of air bubbles, and the silver chloride pack is thoroughly moistened to ensure accurate and reliable electrochemical measurements.

Cleaning and regenerating the reference system (0:06)
- To "reanimate" the reference system, it must first be thoroughly cleaned of all KCl crystals and then refilled.
- Rinse the dried-out reference electrode thoroughly with ultrapure water.
- Rinse crystallized KCl thoroughly with ultrapure water.
- Fill the syringe with electrolyte solution. Only KCl solution with a concentration of 3 mol/L should be used. A different electrolyte would alter the electrode's reference potential.
- Rinse the electrode with electrolyte solution until solution flows from both openings. Continue rinsing until all KCl crystals have dissolved in the reference system.
- Fill the reference system so that there is no air bubble left at the tip and close it with the diaphragm holder.
- Before reuse, store the reference system upright for at least 6 hours. During this time, it must not be immersed in a solution. This period allows the equilibrium in the reference system to be re-established and the pin diaphragm to be completely saturated.

Cleaning the electrolyte vessel (01:43)
- Thoroughly rinse the electrolyte container with ultrapure water. Remove all crystals. An ultrasonic bath can also be helpful for this.
- Pour in the external electrolyte in such a way that there is no air bubble in front of the diaphragm.
- The diaphragm must be completely moistened before use. This usually takes about 15 minutes. During this time, the electrolyte container must not be immersed in the solution.
- For clarity, the solution has been colored with potassium permanganate.
- Before assembly, check that the electrolyte vessel is filled to the line without air bubbles, that there is no air bubble in front of the diaphragm of the reference system, and that the silver chloride pack is well moistened.
