LL-Ag/AgCl Reference System - Preparing for Operation

Introduction

Preparing the LL-Ag/AgCl reference system for operation ensures a stable reference potential and reliable measurement performance. Before beginning, gather all required materials, including the LL-Ag/AgCl reference system, electrolyte vessel, 3 mol/L potassium chloride (KCl) electrolyte solution, a syringe, and ultrapure water for rinsing the reference electrode. Although new reference systems are supplied filled, it is recommended to top up the electrolyte before first use to ensure optimal performance.

During this procedure, the condition of the reference system is verified, the internal reference system is refilled with fresh 3 mol/L KCl electrolyte, and the reference electrode is assembled. Care is taken to eliminate air bubbles, particularly around the Long-Life silver chloride cartridge and the diaphragm, as trapped air can affect electrode performance. Before use, confirm that the electrolyte vessel is filled to the indicated level, the reference system is free of air bubbles, and the Long-Life silver chloride cartridge is completely surrounded by electrolyte solution to ensure accurate and reliable electrochemical measurements.

    • It is also recommended to top up the electrolyte solution c(KCl) = 3 mol/L when using a new reference system.
    • To refill the reference system, unscrew the diaphragm carrier.
    • Fill the syringe with electrolyte solution. Only KCl solution with a concentration of 3 mol/L should be used. A different electrolyte would alter the electrode's reference potential.
    • Rinse the electrode with electrolyte solution so that solution comes out of both openings.
    • Fill the reference system until no air bubble remains at the tip and close it with the diaphragm holder. If an air bubble is present in the area of ​​the Long-Life silver chloride cartridge, gently tap it to allow it to rise to the top.
  • Assembling the electrode (01:42)
    • The reference system and the electrolyte vessel together form the reference electrode.
    • Before assembly, check that the electrolyte vessel is filled to the line without air bubbles, that there is no air bubble in front of the diaphragm of the reference system, and that the Long-Life silver chloride cartridge is surrounded by electrolyte solution.
