Introduction
Regular maintenance of the LL-Ag/AgCl reference electrode helps ensure a stable reference potential and reliable measurement performance. In most cases, maintenance consists of replenishing the electrolyte in both the internal reference system and the external electrolyte vessel. Before beginning, gather the required materials, including 3 mol/L potassium chloride (KCl) electrolyte solution, a syringe, and ultrapure water for rinsing the reference electrode.
During this procedure, the reference system and electrolyte vessel are disassembled, rinsed, and refilled while taking care to eliminate air bubbles that could affect electrode performance. The internal reference system should always be refilled with 3 mol/L KCl to maintain the correct reference potential, while the external electrolyte should match the requirements of the application. Before reassembling the electrode, verify that the electrolyte vessel is filled to the indicated level, the reference system is free of air bubbles, and the Long Life silver chloride cartridge is completely surrounded by electrolyte solution to ensure accurate and reliable electrochemical measurements.

Refilling the reference system (0:06)
- Refill the reference system exclusively with c(KCl) = 3 mol/L.
- To service the reference electrode, unscrew the reference system and the electrolyte vessel.
- To refill the reference system, unscrew the diaphragm carrier.
- Fill the syringe with electrolyte solution. Only KCl solution with a concentration of 3 mol/L should be used. A different electrolyte would alter the electrode's reference potential.
- Rinse the electrode with electrolyte solution so that solution comes out of both openings.
- Fill the reference system until no air bubble remains at the tip and close it with the diaphragm holder. If an air bubble is present in the area of the Long-Life silver chloride cartridge, gently tap it to allow it to rise to the top.
- Refilling the electrolyte container (01:52)
- Typically, c(KCl) = 3 mol/L is used as the external electrolyte. However, depending on the application, other electrolytes can also be used.
- Thoroughly rinse the electrolyte container with ultrapure water and refill it with the external electrolyte used for its application, ensuring that no air bubble is present in front of the diaphragm.
- Before assembly, check that the electrolyte vessel is filled to the line without air bubbles, that there is no air bubble in front of the diaphragm of the reference system, and that the Long-Life silver chloride cartridge is surrounded by electrolyte solution.
